Women experience hair loss due to several reasons. These reasons include hair loss associated with pregnancy, excessive amounts of androgens, stress, vitamin deficiencies and menopause. Some medical conditions such as cancer and leukemia can also contribute to hair loss.

Use of androgen receptor inhibitors
Androgens are male hormones that are sometimes produced in female ovaries. Excessive amounts of this hormone in the body leads to hair loss. This can be corrected by using androgen inhibitors. Some of the androgen inhibitors available include the following
– Spironolactone (Aldactone).
This product slows down androgen production in ovaries and thyroid gland. Another role it plays is preventing a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from binding to its androgenetic receptor. By doing the above, Aldactone ends up rejuvenating regrowth of hair. This medication is prescribed off label for to postmenopausal women. It is not an FDA approved medication for hair regrowth. It is avoided for women of child bearing age because it causes birth defects.
It is mainly used to treat excessive facial hair growth. This product is effective in treating women with androgenic alopecia. Higher doses of this medication is required for best results
– Cyproterone Acetate
It is used to treat hirsutism and androgenetic alopecia in women. Hirsutism is the growth of hair in parts of the body that is only supposed to growing men such as beards. It stimulates hair regrowth by blocking DHT from binding to itsreceptors.
Progesterone and Estrogen treatment
These two are hormones that regulate women’s menstrual cycles. The use of the pills and creams containing these hormones is effective in treating alopecia in women. It is mainly used by women who are going through menopause.
Use of Lasers
This is one of the light treatment therapies for hair regrowth. It is recommended for use where minodixil or finasteride was not effective. It can be done with the use of a laser comb
This is the more permanent solution to hair loss. It involves surgical removal of hair follicles where there is dense growth. This hair follicles are then implanted in the thinning patches of hair. This hair regrowth treatment for women is mainly used when all the other treatments have failed.
